NEW CENTER OF
INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION
Welcome to Samokov Municipality and Borovets resort!
Samokov Municipality, the fourth largest in Bulgaria and the largest in the Sofia region, is situated in the Samokov valley at the foot of the majestic and picturesque Rila, Verila, Vitosha and Plana mountains. The beautiful mountain views and natural parks, as well as the numerous winter and summer attractions, together with the cultural and architectural heritage of the region, are vital for tourism development, a pride for our residents and a motivation for the Municipality team to work hard for their preservation and sharing with our guests.
The oldest Bulgarian resort Borovets (founded in 1896) is a pearl in the crown of Bulgarian mountain tourism, located at an altitude of 1350m and at a distance of only 70 km south of the capital Sofia and 125 km from the second largest city in the country Plovdiv, providing excellent conditions for year-round tourism. In winter the resort attracts visitors from around the world with nearly 60 km ski runs and international competitions. In summer it is the starting point for walking, trekking, cycling and riding and is a preferred family holiday destination. Borovets is also the year-round starting point for conquering the highest peak of the Balkans - Mount Musala (2925m). The high quality accommodation in the resort and the possibility to combine it with mountain tourism and sport are the driving force for successful conference, business and spa tourism - make sure yourself!
Today, when Borovets celebrates its 120th anniversary, we look ahead to the prospects for development. The desire of the municipality and the inhabitants of the region is to build on the rich resort tradition and to strengthen its position as a top modern international mountain destination. The Golden Triangle territory in the heart of the resort gives this opportunity for a great step forward and therefore we need your help!
As a Mayor of Samokov Municipality I would like to thank all the participants and partners of this competition. We share a great challenge and responsibility with you, and we rely on your professionalism, experience and ideas.
The team of Samokov Municipality wishes you courage and success!
Mr. Vladimir Georgiev,
Mayor of Samokov Municipality
THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE
Subject of the competition is the selection and realisation of a conceptual project for the Golden Triangle territory (2.3ha) in Borovets mountain resort, Samokov Municipality, Bulgaria. The area is located in the most lively and attractive part of the resort, next to the finish line of the ski runs and the initial stations of the cabin and chairlift as well as to some of the largest and most important hotel complexes. The location of the area determines the importance of this space for the operation of the resort and for the overall architectural and aesthetic formation. Specific scope themes are those of the border territories, the natural environment and habitats, as well as the immovable cultural heritage on the territory of the competition.
The renovation of the Golden Triangle territory allows intervention in some existing topics of the modern built environment on the territory, which currently include functional, aesthetic, financial and image-related problems as well as solving existing communication problems related mainly to the pedestrian access to key sites within the territory and their surroundings, highlighting and providing access to the two cultural and historical heritage sites, basic maintenance of the existing vegetation and other activities, presented in detail in the competition program.
